The Model United Nations Club is continuing to create peaceful solutions to global problems as they attend conferences this year.  Model UN introduces students to the work of the United nations and pressing international issues.  They have an opportunity to take part in unique and exciting simulations of UN bodies.  The conferences allow them to use skills such as research, resolution-writing, caucusing and public speaking.  These skills and their experience at conferences allow them to learn and develop as global citizens.  This year we participated in the Columbia University Model United Nations Conference in January and our biggest event was the UNA-USA conference held at the United NationsMarch 1.  Students from all over New York City sat on committees discussing such topics as child soldiers, meeting the protection needs of women and children refuggees, eradication of poverty, access to medication and illicit trade of light weapons.  Our students performed very well and out of 80 students two of our students won Best Delegate awards in their committee.  Drenica Camaj and Tahmina Akthar stood out in their committee on the protection needs of women and children.  Their combinaiton of public speaking, research, writing and diplomatic skills were recognized by the conference's organizers.  Our club looks forward to our next conference at the Lab School in Manhattan in April.  New members are always welcome and should see Ms. Kugler for more infomation.
